What the FLOCK are these things !!!?
The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys)
The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB), an insect not previously seen on our continent, was apparently accidentally introduced into eastern Pennsylvania. As of September 2010, the BMSB has been recorded in many other states including California, Delaware, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia. This insect is becoming a serious agricultural pest in the Mid-Atlantic region causing crop losses in apple and peach orchards. It also has been known to feed on blackberry, corn , soybeans, tomatoes, lima beans and green peppers. It is probable that it will become a pest in other areas of the United States too. In the household, BMSB becomes a nuisance pest both indoors and out when it is attracted to the outside of houses on warm fall days in search of protected, overwintering sites. If you’re reading this, then you’ve probably experienced these buggers and are stinkin’ annoyed by now!
The BMSB are not known to cause harm to humans, although homeowners find the flocks of bugs a nusiance when they noisily dive and fly about. The stink bug does not cause damage to structures however there is evidence of the bugs reproducing indoors. Also, if many of them are squashed or pulled into a vacuum cleaner, their smell can be quite apparent.
